The sound of a key in the lock woke him.

The room was still dark. He glanced around. It wasn’t dawn, but the sky outside was getting lighter. He’d had maybe two, two and a half hours of sleep. He glanced at his watch. Yeah, two and a half. He stood up as the door opened.

Peter was standing there. “Santiago wants to see you. Both of you.”

He glanced over at Andrea. She pulled off the covers and threw her legs over the side of the bed and stood as well. Peter turned back and flicked on the overhead light. Elias’s eyeballs seared from the sudden brightness.

Andrea was fumbling, trying to put her shoes on. He went to her side and steadied her by the elbow as she slid her foot into the first shoe. He held her close as she slid on the second one. He leaned in and whispered, “Keep your eyes open for trouble,” before dropping a kiss in her hair. He kept his arm casually around her waist and walked with her to the door.

Peter stepped out of the way and let them go out into the hallway. There was another guard there. This guy was big, Elias’s size. He turned and started down the hallway. They followed. Andrea stepped away slightly, so he had to drop his arm. It was fine by him. He liked to have his hands free.

The guy in front of them seemed to know what he was doing. Elias figured him for former military. He didn’t look Hispanic, possibly not a local then. He was a hired guy for sure. They made their way through the enormous house. The floors were all done in marble, and the walls were all white and there was a wide variety of artwork that added color. There wasn’t a speck of dust anywhere. It was very sleek and modern. Had to be Santiago’s way of screaming to the world that he’d made it.

Elias tucked that thought away. He never knew what might come in handy when on an op. Understanding the way his enemy thought was always a plus. Santiago had an ego, and he wanted the world to bow down to him. That hadn’t changed from when they were younger, but now he had the power to enforce it. That was also worth noting. If Santiago got mad at him, he may not have time to talk his way out of it before someone tried to take Elias out.

They finally entered a room at the opposite end of the house. It was done in creams and beiges. A modern man’s office with a rectangular fireplace on the far wall. The desk off to the left was sleek, all chrome and glass. It was too cold for Elias’s taste. He wasn’t much of a chrome and glass man when it came to his office, but it was attractive to look at.

Santiago was seated behind the desk, with three men standing in front of it. They all turned to look as Elias and Andrea walked in.
